BENEFITS OF
WORKING AS A STUDENT
Building Connections and utilizing
networking opportunities: Student employees have a head start to fit into jobs when they graduate
than their colleagues with no connection in the job. As employees, the student
can showcase their skills, abilities, and virtues. They can get
recommendations from previous employers which helps to boost the likability of
being employed. When there are lots of people who know about your skill, you
stand a better opportunity to land jobs. Networking and connection to the right
people is a very important factor in every career, and when you get it early,
it goes a long way in driving your career higher.
Gaining Career experience: One of the common criteria for being
employed is experience, that’s what employers seek out in potential
employees. They do not need someone who will be a liability to the company, but
someone who can start generating income immediately. It is very difficult for
graduates without experience to land jobs nowadays, which gives professionally
experienced students an advantage. Also as a student who has been working, you
can gain valuable insights into what it's like to be employed regardless of
whether your job relates to your major or area of study.
Source
of Income and Self-dependence: As a student, being employed
generates income that goes a long way, not just to solve the problem of no textbooks,
food, etc. With a good inflow of income, a student can execute a lot of ideas
and visions, they can be able to access a lot of opportunities that requires
fund. Also, the student gets to be self-dependent, not waiting for a relative
to provide. After graduation the student has a good head start for real-world opportunities.
Learn
Transferable skills: As a student who is employed, a lot of transferable
skills can be acquired, skills like, Leadership skills, time management, work
ethics, verbal skills, etc. These skills are important to landing jobs
DEMERITS OF WORKING AS A STUDENT
Less or no time for socialization: It is very expedient that every
student socializes, we should engage ourselves in groups or forums that make
us happy and help us explore some of our abilities outside school and work.
These social moments can help to relieve stress. Working as a student tends to
take socialization away from you and make little time available to spend with
your family and friends, due to the time you have to spend working and making
up for the time you missed in school. Your ability to fully engage yourself in
the college experience could be limited.
Accumulated
Stress: As a student managing class attendance, Homework and projects
can be stressful on their own. When you try to manage this with a job, it can be
very stressful, sometimes these can lead to poor grades. It gets harder during
exam periods; I recommend that you stop your work for the moment till after
your exams to maximize concentration.
METHOD OF MAINTAINING A GOOD GRADE WHILE WORKING AS A STUDENT
Choose
a job location that is not far away from your school:
Job location is one of the first things to consider when you’ve
decided to work as a student. The distance of your job location from your
school should be at most a 45 minutes drive so that you can be able to cope
in case of emergencies. It is much better to work remotely or online, so that
you don’t have to be bothered by distance, but time.
Update
your employer:
It is very expedient that you do not keep your employer in the
dark, regarding your schedule as a student. To properly cope in school, there
needs to be an efficient and constant update of information concerning your
school, with this information, your employer will know when to permit you to
leave for your school activities so he doesn’t make your life more difficult. This must be done during your interview or application. Let
your employer know that you are a student.
Manage
your time:
Many factors ensure that your time is managed
properly as a student. Some important ones are;
·
Elaborately
Plan your day, have a schedule: you must plan your activities, especially before you sleep. The aim is to give you a clear
picture of what you are meant to achieve. True, your daily schedule might not
work out exactly, but it is far more productive than having no plans. Properly make
a study plan and time for Homework and projects.
·
Learn
to be disciplined with time: Take away every distraction,
learn to do things at the stipulated time. For your study time, try to get a
solitary place to avoid distraction, if you love reading in a noisy place, just
try to let your friends around you know that you need to study, politely. You
can learn to utilize periods like your travel time on the bus to study, it
helps.
Study
your semester syllabus:
You should have a very good knowledge of your semester syllabus,
it gets more difficult when you have no idea what your course is talking about.
This knowledge helps you get materials you can use on your own to study in your
free periods. Remember, you don’t have all the time, so you should try to be
ahead.
Have
a good support system:
These involve your friends, family, and even your teachers. Have
friends who can feed you with adequate information even when you are not
around. They can be able to put you through some problems peradventure you were
not in class; your teacher can help in this aspect. Your family can help to
support you, sometimes you get discouraged and would want to quit, your family
can serve as a backbone, don’t neglect them.
Lastly,
look for ways to relieve stress
Do not allow accumulated stress, this can affect your health and
cause you to break down, just look for a legal way to relieve stress.
Do you think other factors should be considered when working as a student?
